As a Web Editor for KOMU.com (the Web site of mid-Missouri’s NBC affiliate), I supplement every reporter’s video with additional coverage online, from text stories and still graphics to interactive Flash graphics. Since the push to the Web is still relatively new, we currently don’t have a style set for these Flash graphics. I’m starting to develop some ideas for a template and style, which is still in the planning stages.

My main goal is to make it relatively easy and user friendly for the reporters. After they work on video stories for 10+ hours, it can be taxing for them to supplement their coverage with graphics. I need the template to have a set style that reporters won’t have to worry about. Some examples:

  • Consistent font, colors (to a degree), widths, etc
  • Library filled with common ActionScript codes
  • Library with common maps for KOMU graphics: viewing area, Boone County, Columbia, Missouri, USA
  • Attached document with instructions on how to do basic Flash graphics and also explaining different types of Flash graphics

    I’d be interested in hearing other ideas and some suggestions on how to make this happen. My goal is to have this done within a few weeks.
