Job alert: We need a hacker-journalist at the Elkhart Truth

I’m on the hunt for a hacker-journo-programmer type to join my digital team at the Elkhart Truth. Some exciting things are happening here: a redesign of the website, construction of a mobile-first strategy and complete relaunch of the digital desk. We need someone with a creative eye who is willing to build some really cool news apps for our readers. Could that person be you? Check out the description below and let me know if you’re interested. It’s a brand new position, so I’d love to get someone great in here to work on some exciting new projects.

(PS: We’re also hiring a digital photographer and a digital producer.)

The Elkhart Truth has an immediate opening for a digital news developer. What’s a digital news developer, you ask? Good question. We hope your unique skill set can help provide the answer. It’s a new position on a new team with a new supervisor within our newsroom (which isn’t new — in fact, it’s been around since 1889).

In short, the digital news developer should be able to:

  • Tell important and impactful stories for our readership by using and making digital tools

  • Retrieve and visualize sets of data, including economic, housing, census, law enforcement and others kinds of newsy datasets

  • Use existing APIs and other tools to help report great stories locally

  • Produce regular data-driven and interactive content in a daily newsroom environment while also building toward larger applications

  • Collaborate regularly with other newsroom staffers

  • Draw from and contribute to the hacker journalism community

The developer will report to the director on the newsroom’s digital desk. As a team, the desk is responsible for leading the newsroom with breaking news, social media, multimedia, data visualization, aggregation and user-generated content, as well as contributing to a monthly digital publication. The Truth Publishing Company is a family-owned company in Elkhart, Ind., where we inform, educate and serve the community through local news and product innovation. Our core products include elkharttruth.com, The Elkhart Truth daily newspaper, and a growing number of digital publications.

Elkhart is located between Chicago, Indianapolis and Detroit, and is home to a rejuvenated downtown, a budding arts scene, craft breweries and the second-largest county fair (we’re gunning for you, Orange County). We’re also within an hour’s drive of the beaches of Lake Michigan, multiple wineries, Warren Dunes State Park, tons of recreational activities and a football team named the Fighting Irish.

Great things are brewing here. The digital team is an important part of our company’s future, and our leadership is fully supportive of our efforts to innovate. If you’re interested in joining our team, please send a cover letter and resume, as well as a link to your digital portfolio and/or links to past work you’re proud of, to rmartin@elkharttruth.com.
